Dr. Janelle Joseph gives SKHS a talk on sport and systemic barriers of racism
As part of the SKHS Anti-Racism Seminar series, Dr. Janelle Joseph, an Assistant Professor of Critical Race Studies at the University of Toronto, gave a talk on Kinesiology, sport, and systemic barriers of racism on November 18th, 2020.
Abstract of the presentation is available below:
“Although the diversity among participants in Canadian athletic institutions and students in Kinesiology programs has steadily increased, our organizations still struggle to develop a deep understanding of (anti-)racism issues, awareness of ongoing structural barriers, and actions to ensure representation and justice for those who experience racialization and oppression. Dr. Joseph will share her perspectives on decolonizing sport studies and her partnership with The Black Canadian Coaches Association (BCCA). Together, the IDEAS Lab and the BCCA are engaging in the Racial Equity Project, which aims to raise awareness, develop policy, and build educational tools to eradicate systemic anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism within Canadian college and university sport. The Racial Equity project will take a data-driven, evidence-based approach to exposing the operations of whiteness in sport and improving the academic progress, athletic productivity, mental health, and advancement opportunities of racialized sport administrators, coaches, and athletes.”
